We took Poptart to the vet yesterday and she thinks he has allergies, and that could be the cause of his eyes clouding up. She wants me to put drops in his eyes and give him some allergy medicine. I tried that earlier and it went about as well as expected. Which is to say… badly. Fun fact that no one asked for: Poptart hates to be swaddled. Like hates it with a passion. And I can’t hold him while swaddled and do whatever needs to be done. I can hold him while swaddled and have someone else do what needs to be done, but he can totally wiggle out of a blanket and/or towel even if it’s tightly wrapped around him (I know how to swaddle, I had four kids) if he wants to. Plus he has teeth and he can bite. Another fun fact no one asked for. Poptart hates to be muzzled too. Try and put the two together, and you’ve got one pissed off little bundle of fur and teeth. So I try not to do either if I can help it. In the end, I put a drop of the solution on my finger and touched it to the corner of his eye. Yeah, it’s not as sanitary as dropping it to his eyeball, but that’s the best I could do. It’s the closest he would let me get the medicine to his eye. Maybe it’ll be enough. Otherwise, it’s a no-go. If anyone has any tips on how to deliver eye drops to a wiggly, bitey dog. I’m all ears.
The vet also said that she noticed the beginning of cataracts in his eyes and that might be the cause of the cloudiness, but she doesn’t think so. It could also be the a thickening of his lenses due to age (he’s ten). Right now though, she thinks it might be allergies. So drops it is and we’ll see what happens. Of course, if it is either cataracts or a thickening of the lens, there isn’t much we can do about that. I mean, that’s just age creeping up on him. But the vet thinks it may be allergies because he also has a cough, which we were treating him for just before we took him in yesterday with antibiotics. I mean, he’s always had a cough because he’s a Chihuahua and they cough, but it got way worse over the last week or so… and we took him in. His lungs are fine and his heart is fine, so they wanted to give him the antibiotics just to be on the safe side. They seem to work, until yesterday now his cough is back and so… maybe allergies? I dunno. It’s not like he can tell us what’s bothering him. I mean, New Mexico is new to him and he’s never been through an early Autumn here so it could be.
Anyway, just thought I’d catch y’all up on what the vet said. He’s still acting normal in every other way, so there’s that.
